SYSTEM IS CONFIGURED WITH:
Solid State Drive (SSD)

OPERATING SYSTEMS:
Microsoft Windows 7
Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7
Microsoft Windows 8
Microsoft Windows Vista
Microsoft Windows XP

SOLUTION:
Due to the date transfer speeds that SSDs are capable of, it is important to configure the system properly in order to avoid stability issues.

Set the SATA controller mode in BIOS to AHCI as instructed below:

- Enter BIOS by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad splash screen. You
can also press Enter to bring up the Startup Interrupt Menu and then
  press F1.
- Select the CONFIG menu and then Serial ATA.
- Select AHCI for the SATA Controller Mode option.
- NOTE: The default setting for the SATA controller is AHCI. If
the machine has been reloaded with the SATA controller set to
compatibility mode, changing the controller mode may result in a
bluescreen error during boot. Reloading the machine in AHCI mode may
  be necessary.
Ensure that correct SATA driver for you system is installed as instructed
 below:

- Your machine came from the factory loaded with the correct SATA
driver at the time the machine was built, but newer drivers may be
released to add new features, stability, or to correct any issues
found after the initial release. Depending upon how it was built, a
custom image may have a driver that was released for an earlier
machine or may simply use the default Windows driver. Either may
  cause stability problems.
- The latest supported SATA drivers for your machine can be found
   at the following URL:

  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?LegacyDocID=TPAD-MATRIX

 - Select your machine. The SATA drivers will be listed under the
    Storage category.
- NOTE: The SATA driver may be different depending upon operating
system version and whether the operating system is 32 or 64 bit. The
README file on the driver’s download page shows system requirements
  and installation instructions.
Update your SSD’s firmware as instructed below:

- While every effort is made to ensure trouble free operation, an
issue may arise that requires the firmware of your SSD to be updated.
The release of new operating systems, disk encryption software, and
other events may require a firmware update to ensure compatibility
  and stable operation.
- A bootable CD that contains the current firmware for all Lenovo
SSDs can be found at the following URL

      http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-69806.

      - The README file on the firmware download page shows system
requirements and installation instructions.

SOLUTION:
A ThinkPad battery can be set up for maximum runtime (hours) or for maximum lifespan (years) before it must be replaced.

Optimizing for runtime (hours):

The normal default Lenovo Power Manager Battery Maintenance setting
keeps your battery fully charged. Lenovo Power Manager starts
charging when the battery drops below 96 percent and stops at 100
percent. The runtime on the battery depends on the Power Plan
settings chosen.

There are several predefined Power Plans which can be customized for
your needs or you can create your own. For the best runtimes, start
with the Maximum Battery Life Power Plan.

Optimizing for lifespan (years):

The main reasons that defeat battery longevity are age, the number of
charge cycles, the amount of time at full charge, and the high
temperature.

For maximum lifespan when rarely using the battery, set the Custom
charge thresholds to start charging at 40 percent capacity and stop
at 50 percent and keep the ThinkPad cool. The thresholds can be
adjusted in the Battery Maintenance settings of the Lenovo Power
Manager.

If you do use your battery frequently, set the start threshold at 85
percent and stop at 90 percent. This will still give a good lifespan
benefit over keeping it charged to 100 percent.

For some systems, the simplest way to optimize for battery lifespan
is to select Automatic in the Power Manager Battery Maintenance
settings and let it manage the battery charge thresholds.

SYSTEM IS CONFIGURED WITH:
ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, and ThinkStation products using LSC 2.0.013, 2.0.014 , 2.0.016, and up to and including 2.1.003 Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 8, with two different size drives. Large drive test sequence first and small drive second.

APPLIES TO:
Microsoft Windows 7
Microsoft Windows 8
Microsoft Windows XP

SOLUTION:
Solution 1: (downloading from the eSupport site):

A fixed version of LSC 2.2.001 will be available at the following URL:

http://www.lenovo.com/diags

NOTE: Users should ensure that LSC version 2.2.001, or greater, is available on the eSupport site. If not, users should use Solution 2 to upgrade to the fixed version of LSC.

Solution 2 (updating from an existing version of LSC):

Users that already have an earlier version of LSC on their system will automatically be prompted to upgrade to the latest version when LSC is launched.

When using the effected levels of LSC, an error may display when running drive diagnostics on both drives with the sequence of test being larger drive first and smaller drive second.

Perform the following to correctly test drive the operation:

· Run LSC Drive diagnostics on each drive separately, or
· Run the UEFI built in BIOS drive diagnostics by pressing F10 during
boot.

NOTE: If the first drive in the test sequence shows as the smaller drive and the second as the larger drive, the test will run correctly.

Results when tested correctly:

· No failure.
o Do not replace either drive.
· Failure occurs when performing a single test on each drive
separately, or when using the UEFI test, or when performing a multiple drive test with the correct sequence being small drive first and large drive second.
o Replace the failing drive.

NOTE: The next release of LSC will contain a solution for the false positive failure.

LIMITATIONS:
LSC 2.0.013 and 2.0.014 are the only levels of software that exhibits this false failure.

WORKAROUND:

Use UEFI diagnostics or test each drive separately using LSC drive diagnostics.

This Tip only applies if the user is running LSC version 2.0.013, 2.0.016, or up to and including 2.1.003.

When using the affected levels of LSC, an error may display when running more than one storage drive at once with a sequence of a large capacity drive first followed by a smaller capacity drive second.

Perform only one of the following to correctly test the drive operation:
· Run LSC Drive diagnostics on each drive separately.
· Run the UEFI built in BIOS drive diagnostics by pressing F10 during
boot.
. Run the Bootable UEFI diagnostic.
. Run the Bootable Linux diagnostic.

NOTE: If the first drive, in the test sequence, shows as the smaller drive and the second as the larger drive, the test will run correctly.

Results when tested correctly:

· No failure.
o Do not replace either drive.
· Failure occurs when performing a single test on each drive
separately, or when using the UEFI test, or when performing a multiple drive test with the correct sequence being the small drive first and large drive second.
o Replace the failing drive.

Firmware update for 2.5" Micron C400 series Solid State Drives to fix Bluescreens and system hangs - ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation

TITLE:
Firmware update for 2.5” Micron C400 series Solid State Drives to fix Bluescreens and system hangs – ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation

SYMPTOM:
ThinkPads Systems with Lenovo Branded Micron sourced C400 series 2.5” solid state drives (SSD) may experience Bluescreens, system hangs, crashes, or the drive may not be seen.

AFFECTED CONFIGURATIONS:
ThinkPad
ThinkCentre
ThinkStation

AFFECTED SYSTEMS:
Any ThinkPad or ThinkCentre with a 128GB or 256GB Micron C400 2.5” solid state drive, or ThinkStation with a 512GB Micron C400 2.5” solid state drive. These drives were shipped with some T430, T430s, T530, W530, X230, and X230 ThinkPad systems. These SSDs are also available as options.

SYSTEM IS CONFIGURED WITH:
A Lenovo branded Micron C400 128GB, or 256GB, or 512GB 2.5” solid state d rive. These drives can be identified as follows:

- The 128GB drive's label will show a P/N of MTFDDAK128MAM-1J1.
- The 256GB drive's label will show a P/N of MTFDDAK256MAM-1K12.
- The 512GB drive's label will show a P/N of MTFDDAK512MAM-1K1.

Below is an example of a Micron 256GB C400 drive label:

Description: cid:image002.png@01CE7362.81660860

APPLIES TO:
All Operating Systems

SOLUTION:
Update the drive's firmware to resolve these issues. A new firmware has been released that addresses these issues as well as some encryption compatibility problems. For the 128GB and 512GB drive, the new firmware is 070H. For the 256GB drive, the new firmware is 08TH.

There are two versions of this firmware: a bootable CD version and a Windows executable. Regardless of version, any existing hard drive password that was set up in BIOS needs to be removed. If running any full disk encryption software (e.g. Bitlocker, Endpoint Encryption, PGP, SafeGuard, etc.) use of the Windows based firmware updater requires that the drive be decrypted otherwise the firmware update will fail. For this reason, it is recommended that users with encrypted drives use the CD version to update their drive's firmware since no decryption is needed.
Although the firmware update makes no changes to the data on the drive, it is recommended that a backup be performed prior to any firmware update.

Unzip and run Lenovo_08TH_Win8_SSDFirmwareUpdater.exe. View and
accept the license agreement.
- There is a specific file depending upon whether you have a 128GB
or 256GB drive and whether running Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8.
- Before running the program, save and exit any running
applications.
- Run the appropriate firmware update program for your drive. Upon
completion, the machine will need to automatically shut down and
reboot to complete finish the update.

NOTES:

1) For either method used to update the firmware, when booting back
into Windows, the operating system may say that new hardware was
detected and a reboot is necessary to complete the installation.
This is normal behavior after update drive firmware.

2) If the drive failed diagnostics prior to updating the firmware, it
will likely continue to fail after the update. If the drive still
fails, it will be replaced under warranty. Please contact Lenovo
support for replacement.

Unexpected battery charge levels - ThinkPad Helix

TITLE:
Unexpected battery charge levels - ThinkPad Helix

SYMPTOM:
The user may experience one of the following symptoms:

· The battery may unexpectedly stop charging at 50 percent,
even though Battery Health Mode is set to “Always fully charge”.
· The battery may unexpectedly charge to 100 percent, even
though the Battery Health Mode is set to “Automatically optimize for
battery life”.

AFFECTED CONFIGURATIONS:
ThinkPad

AFFECTED SYSTEMS:
Helix

OPERATING SYSTEMS:
Microsoft Windows 8

LIMITATIONS:
Lenovo has confirmed that this is an issue with the Lenovo Settings application.

SOLUTION:
None.

WORKAROUND:
Attach the Tablet to the keyboard base, then toggle the Battery Health Mode setting inside the Power section of Lenovo Settings. This will cause the desired setting to be applied to both the Tablet and keyboard dock batteries.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Battery Health Mode is a setting inside the Power section of the Lenovo Settings application. When it is set to “Automatically optimize for battery life”, it means the battery will only charge to 50 percent. When it is set to “Always fully charge”, it means the battery will charge to 100 percent. ThinkPad Helix has two batteries (one inside the Tablet and one inside the keyboard dock).

An issue occurs when the Battery Health Mode setting is changed while the Tablet is undocked. In this case, the new setting is applied only to the Tablet battery and not the keyboard dock battery. To avoid this issue, change the Battery Health Mode setting only while the Tablet is docked.
